So You Want To Be a Developer

Thoughts on Pursuing a New Career in Tech

As a young man, I was not sure that I was built for a career in tech, and now I know that I certainly was not. Why not, you may ask. The reason is that none of us were built for specific jobs, careers, or positions.

We were built to work, and to work hard.

It is true that some are more naturally skilled and talented in certain areas. It is also true that some will not be successful in a specific job, even after years of training.

Understanding this is critically important. You may not fit, despite your work ethic. But you will never know if a certain role is a good fit if you do not first:

  1. Learn about yourself

  2. "Get your hands dirty" in many types of jobs and industries.

The jobs and industries you try do not have to correspond to things you are passionate about, and the work will still be fulfilling simply because work itself is GOOD. As you try things out, you can begin to grasp where you "fit" and take more meaningful steps in that direction.

Until then... TRY THINGS!
